Art Williams
Art Williams is one of America's most celebrated entrepreneurs and motivational figures, best known as the founder of A.L. Williams & Associates — the company that revolutionized the life insurance industry and eventually became Primerica Financial Services. Born Arthur L. Williams Jr. on November 2, 1942, in Waycross, Georgia, he grew up with a deep work ethic shaped by his upbringing in the American South. Before transforming financial services, Williams worked as a high school football coach, an experience that instilled in him the leadership principles, relentless drive, and people-first philosophy that would later define his business career.
In 1977, Williams left coaching to build something far bigger. Fueled by personal conviction after witnessing how whole life insurance had failed his own family, he founded A.L. Williams & Associates on a simple but powerful idea: "Buy Term and Invest the Difference." He believed that average Americans were being sold overpriced, underperforming whole life policies when they deserved clear, affordable term life coverage and the freedom to invest the savings. He built a crusading sales force of ordinary people — teachers, firefighters, nurses — who shared this mission with their own communities. By the mid-1980s, A.L. Williams had grown into one of the largest sellers of individual life insurance in the United States, a David vs. Goliath story that upended the established insurance industry.
Williams's legacy extends well beyond business metrics. His 1987 speech "Just Do It" — delivered to thousands of his sales force at a company convention — became one of the most widely distributed motivational recordings in history, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs, salespeople, and leaders. In it, he preached that success comes not from talent or luck but from outworking everyone else, staying committed when others quit, and doing what you said you'd do. Williams stepped down from day-to-day leadership as the company was acquired and evolved into Primerica under Citigroup, but his philosophy of financial empowerment for the middle class and his message of relentless determination have endured. For Nightingale-Conant listeners, Art Williams represents the spirit of building something extraordinary through passion, persistence, and an unshakable belief in people.
