Theron Q. Dumont

Theron Q. Dumont was the pen name of William Walker Atkinson (December 5, 1862 – November 22, 1932), a prolific American attorney, publisher, and author who became one of the most influential figures in the New Thought movement of the early twentieth century. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Atkinson pursued a successful legal career before suffering a complete physical and mental breakdown in the late 1890s. His recovery through New Thought principles transformed his life's direction — he relocated to Chicago in 1900, became a protégé of Dr. Herbert A. Parkyn, and devoted the remainder of his career to writing, editing, and teaching the philosophy of mental power.

Writing under the Dumont persona — which he presented as a Parisian instructor specializing in personal magnetism — Atkinson produced a remarkable series of works focused on harnessing the full capacity of the human mind. Titles such as The Power of Concentration, The Art and Science of Personal Magnetism, The Master Mind, and Practical Memory Training blended New Thought philosophy with actionable instruction, teaching readers how to develop concentration, will power, and mental influence as tools for personal and professional achievement. His approach was grounded, systematic, and deeply aligned with the self-improvement culture reshaping American thinking in the Progressive Era.

Atkinson was extraordinarily prolific — researchers have identified over 100 titles authored under his own name and multiple pseudonyms, including Yogi Ramacharaka (for his yoga and Eastern philosophy writings) and Swami Bhakta Vishita (for works on clairvoyance and metaphysics). He served as editor of New Thought magazine, founded the Atkinson School of Mental Science, and was honorary president of the International New Thought Alliance. His books have remained continuously in print since 1900. At Nightingale-Conant, his Theron Q. Dumont teachings on concentration and mental discipline continue to resonate with listeners who understand that mastery of the mind is the foundation of all lasting achievement.
