Wally Amos
Wallace "Wally" Amos Jr. (July 1, 1936 – August 13, 2024) was an American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker best known as the founder of Famous Amos cookies. Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Amos moved to New York City at age 12 after his parents' divorce, where his Aunt Della introduced him to the joy of baking chocolate chip cookies — a simple act of love that would define his legacy. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and earning his GED, he made history as the first African American talent agent at the William Morris Agency, representing artists including Simon & Garfunkel, The Temptations, and Marvin Gaye.
In 1975, armed with a $25,000 loan from friends Marvin Gaye and Helen Reddy, Amos opened the first Famous Amos cookie store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The venture became a cultural phenomenon, turning a beloved homemade recipe into a nationally recognized brand carried in supermarkets across America. When financial pressures forced him to sell the company in 1988, Amos responded not with bitterness but with the same entrepreneurial spirit that launched his first venture — going on to found Uncle Noname's Cookie Company and later The Cookie Kahuna. His resilience in the face of loss became as much a part of his message as the cookies themselves.
Beyond his business career, Amos was a tireless advocate for literacy, hosting the educational television series Learn to Read and championing adult education throughout his life. His books — including The Cookie Never Crumbles and The Power in You — distilled decades of hard-won wisdom into a philosophy of perseverance, gratitude, and positive thinking. A recipient of the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from President Ronald Reagan, Amos believed that attitude was the most powerful ingredient in any recipe for success. His message resonated deeply with the Nightingale-Conant audience: that obstacles are simply opportunities in disguise, and that the unwillingness to quit is the true secret to a meaningful life.
