Claude Bristol

Claude M. Bristol (1891–1951) was an American author, journalist, lawyer, and investment banker whose classic work The Magic of Believing (1948) has sold well over a million copies and is widely regarded as one of the foundational texts of the personal development movement. Written in the aftermath of World War II for returning service men and women adjusting to civilian life, the book presented a powerful case for the role of belief and mental visualization in achieving success.

Bristol spent most of his career in Portland, Oregon, working as a journalist and businessman while studying the principles that separated successful people from the rest. He was particularly fascinated by the power of repeated thought and focused belief to shape outcomes — what he called "the magic of believing." His research drew from psychology, religion, and his own business experiences.

Major celebrities of the era — including Liberace and Phyllis Diller — credited The Magic of Believing as a major influence on their success. Liberace was such a devoted student of the work that Bristol's publisher released a special "Liberace Edition" featuring the entertainer on the cover. Though Bristol passed away just three years after the book's publication, his ideas continue to influence modern manifestation and mindset teachings.
